Total drumming hours: 6 (all during lessons)
But!!! During one of the lessons a student request that I show how many hits I could do in a minute on the dbl bass. I hit 705. That's all my speed work for today.
Lot's of musicality. And went to a fantastic dance recital/fund raiser tonight. It have me a lot of new ideas. Also, may have begun an apprentice mentor relationship with a 9th grader who has at least 4 hours per day to practice. This could be the start of something great for him. Our goal is to prepare him for a full ride scholarship to Berkelee.

Really missing practicing with musicality as the objective. I hope this pays off musically by the end of the year, but hopefully a lot sooner. My students are getting interested in DeathClock. The drummer has got to be playing his bass drums at around 900 hits per minute through entire songs. I'm hovering around 700 in one minute and I"m like, "Whew, made it!" I'm just wondering if I could ever keep 700 going for 2 minutes? He's got to weigh 300 plus pounds. A very inspiring guy, and obviously a technical wonder. There is no way he's just using brute strength and cardio fitness. Looks like it's time to get his DVD. His name is Gene Hoglan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSGkxNpP8aU

Total drumming: 2 hour rehearsal 18 piece big band.
Exersize:
Leg joint stability
Tom House style 3lb dumbell 'strength in the range of motion" work
Non drumming:
Punchlist for second iteration of StopWatch
Took son(s) to Dr, Tap Dance, Gym, and got one rolling on homework, and met with a teacher
So, Last Weds I played amazingly with the Fred Radke band. Tonight, however, I did not. As I reviewed my workout schedule, it was at least partially to blame. I'd done my heavy day yesterday, (because I'd fallen almost 2 weeks behind). I'm supposed to do it the day after the rehearsal (game). And, today I did my Tom House-style range of motion workout. I'm not supposed to do that till next Monday. And my body did not want to play drums tonight. Not at all. Unfortunately, instead of holding back and just phoning it in to preserve my joints, etc, I gave too much, so my hands are feeling pretty lousy tonight. They felt lousy during the rehearsal too. Double bass stuff barely worked in rehearsal. With all these solos, I think I'm going to have to modify the set I use there so it gives more consistent feedback. So sad, too bad. I'm back at it tomorrow!

Jan 19, 2010 Tues Exersizes
30 back extensions while holding a 25lb disk.
150 crunches on execise and bolsu balls
80 one footed calf raisers on wobbly disk (40) and balance board (40)
40 one footed rotations on the wobbly board
Started with 5 pound dumbells doing curls, tricept extensions, rows, shoulder presses, wings, and shrugs, plus bench chest work starting with butterflies until the weight got too heavy, then switching to pressess progressively. If your going to lift heavy and you want zero pain and tightness after, you need to warn your body it is coming. Here's how:
20 x 5lbs of each exercise above
16 x 7.5lbs " " " "
12 x 10lbs
8 x 12.5 lbs
6 x 15 lbs
4 x 17.5 lbs
2 x 20 lbs
2 x 22.5 lbs
2 x 25 lbs
2 x 27.5 lbs
2 x 30 lbs
2 x 32.5 lbs
35 is my max. This is what all the previous lifts are all about: Explaining to my body that it's got to lift some weight that's really heavy for it. It's the ultimate warm up. Here are my failures:
AT 35 pounds max:
8 curls
6 rows,
8 shoulder Presses (the last one was hilarious, it felt like it took a full minute)
17 bench presses. It was a joke. Two months ago I could only to 8. But I'm resisting adding more weight till April. I'm letting my tendons, tendons sheaths, and joints adjust. Not that a joint can, but it makes me feel better to lie to myself about it.
I intend to re-evaluate my top weight in March, maybe add 2.5 lbs. Or maybe just add to bench press. I know better what to do in March.
8 30lb assisted dips (replaced tricept extensions after 10lbs and incremented my way up to this)
8 30lb assisted pullups (If i could lose 30 lbs I could do unassisted pullups. Wouldn't that be cool?)
150 crunches on execise and bolsu balls
80 one footed calf raisers on wobbly disk (40) and balance board (40)
40 one footed rotations on the wobbly board

608 Right --painful. Why? I lost concentration and did 'hear' early warnings, then I didn't stop. From now on when pain hits, I'll stop and take the truncated score
384 Left --nearly painfree. Not good enough. Should have stopped myself and taken the lower score. I did stop a couple of times during but should have stopped completely. It's the only way I'll train myself to relaxe and not push too hard.

January 13 '10, Weds
Practiced a tiny bit before rehearsal with Fred Radke in which I played 2 hours solid. But......
I used the Rabb in a drumsolo! It was ratty and raised some eyebrows and has totally inspired me to get a one handed roll going by the concerts March 10th and 13th. The solos in this set are mostly quiet--and basically innapropriately placed. The bassist, Lea, suggested that I lower my asthetic and elevate my ego, and just go for it. Which is actually very perceptive and would broaden me a bit if only I could.
But, I'm thinking this is an opportunity to use my speedyish feet and my Rabb for a public commitment or hurdle. Got asked to play in another band tonight that needs a 'real' big band drummer, not just another combo guy. But, it was too much time away from my top priorities.
I made a lot of progress on patent updates, Amazon research to see if they could be my software download vendor (no), and kind of re-org-ing our software partnership for 2010.
Had a couple of kids over to play with Neo for an hour, Octavio met with his acting coach for a half hour and his OT gym leader in Bothel. Didn't want to risk exercizing today because I woke up at 12:30 am and couldn't get to sleep. At 2:30 went to work on project and basically worked till noon, with a stop to get the boys ready and take them to school. Wednesdays are tough.

Jan 3-8 Cancun, Jan 9 & 10 Redmond WA
Took my stick and practice pad, but wisely enough, I didn't use them. My wrists and fingers had begun to hurt from too much too soon. And especially, I think, from playing through pain instead of stopping completely. So, I'm changing my directive to Painless Practice!!! I've always wondered if it's really true what a lot of people say about gaining speed without "working out". Just by getting more coordinated and your muscles changing over a long period to be fast. This will be interesting. In Cancun I did, however, workout. Yay!
Daily crunches on inflated exercise capsules, and leg extensions.
Monday: Heavy lifting upper body work.
Tuesday: Fire hidrants etc for hips and upper legs.
Weds: 5lbs dumbells doing drummer like movements (Tom House concepts)
Thurs: Squats with capsules on wall, 5lb run through of all the different upper body lifts Monday, and Body Surfing.
Friday: Body surfing and ocean snorkely type swimming. Got SOOOooo dizzy.
Saturday: Taught 13 drum lessons from 8 to 3. Introduced students to the Drum-o-meter. They seemed very excited about it. Recorded their scores.
Sunday: Calf work:
Eyes closed, both feet on wobble board 40 ankle range of motion rotations per side.
Eyes open:
Single foot ankle rotations 40 per side
Single wobble board calf raisers 30 per side (between all that double bass drumming the previous week, and not doing ankle/calf/foot work daily my ankles were really out of it this this morning).
Single wobble pad calf raisers 30 or 40 per side, can't remember!
Lot's of stretching today, too.
Plan to do my one hour of one hand and dbl bass later today. Right now calves are pretty tense. Will probably save myself a lot of pain by just walking around the block first.

Taking sticks and feet with me. Will keep up the discipline using the floor and a chair or pillow as my drums. Probably won't get to update for a week.
